Vesikoski Mill
The Vesikoski museum mill is located in Vesikoski on the northern bank of the Loimijoki River, 2 km from the centre of Loimaa. The old log mill building dates back to 1888, but grain has been ground at the rapids since the 15th century. At the end of the 16th century, there were four simple foot mills operating year-round in Vesikoski, in the middle of the Loimaa grain fields.
The shareholders of the old mill included 12 houses. The equipment and water intake of the Vesikoski mill took on their current form in 1935, and milling ceased in 1963. The museum mill, which is leased and renovated by the city, was opened to the public in 1979 and can be visited by appointment.
Historic factory area
The core of early industry in the agricultural region of Loimaa has been located in Vesikoski and neighbouring Hirvikoski. In addition to mills, the rapids have been home to engineering workshops since the late 19th century, with Vesikoski hosting a nail factory, a sawmill, a paper mill, a power plant and a leather factory. The leather factory buildings have been renovated for a variety of cultural uses.
